After 3 days of waiting for the waves and weather to improve the Monster Energy Pro, presented by Billabong, got underway at 8am HST this morning in 4-5 foot surf at Backdoor and Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore.
They’ve got a NW swell running and the strong trade winds finally backed down enough for them to sound the starting horn.
This 3-star ASP World Qualifying Series event carries critical points towards
qualification for the elite World Championship Tour. While the Monster Energy Pro event is highly attended by international competitors, it is even more valuable for local surfers given that it is a rare opportunity for them to compete at home.
All surfers will also be vying for a handful of “golden tickets” into the prestigious Billabong Pipeline Masters that wraps up the world tour here in December.

Two weeks ago Governator Aaarnoold came out and said he’s in favor of closing 48 California State Parks to deal with the state’s financial troubles – that means one out of every five state parks including beaches and monuments will be closed!
Is he nuts!?!?!
Now Governor Schwarzenegger is aiming his guns at California’s world-famous breaks at Trestles and San Onofre State Beach by throwing his support behind building a huge toll road right through the middle of this beautiful beach park… the fifth most visited park in the state. We’re talking about putting a road directly through a watershed habitat that is home to no less than 11 federally endangered and threatened species… Continue reading »

Speaking of plastic… The Whole Foods chain of markets just announced they will stop using plastic bags at their checkout counters in all of their 270 U.S., Canadian and British stores. Right on!
They’re going to start running down their current inventory and hope to be free of the disposable plastic bags by Earth Day on April 22, 2008.
Let’s hope some other stores will get on the bandwagon!
I’m off to WF to get a salad and tell them “thanks!”.

Did you know that you can do your part to help the environment buy using a rashguard?
Yep, it’s true! If you use a rashguard for your UV protection you will use much less sunscreen, (chemicals), and more importantly: the plastic bottles they come in.
As some of you may or may not know, most of the debris in the ocean is plastic. In fact there are areas in the Pacific Ocean where scientists have found six times more plastic than zooplankton, (the stuff that fish and whales eat)!! That’s outrageous, disgusting and just plain sad…
We don’t want to bum you out, but this information is REALLY important and the word about this needs to get out because many people just don’t realize it.
In an effort to help save the oceans we play in and love, along with the creatures and fish who live in it, (and who are part of our food chain), we will be posting more information about what we’re doing to harm our planet and what we can do to help it and ultimately ourselves.
Stay tuned!

After it rains, plastic debris floats in the Los Angeles River on it’s way to the Pacific Ocean.

According to a recent study released by the Fox Chase Cancer Center, most American adults engage in many behaviors that increase their exposure to UV rays and boost their risk of skin cancer.
These behaviors include infrequent use of UV and sun protective clothing; staying outside in the sun rather than seeking shade; infrequent use of sunscreen; indoor tanning with a sunlamp or tanning bed within the past year; and getting sunburned within the past year.
Whether you’re hanging out on the beach during vacation, coasting down glittering white snow on a winter ski trip, walking your dog or just running errands, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage your skin year-round… Continue reading »

Well, today I’m a little older, a little wiser and now a little wetter.
While much of the California coast is getting pounded by huge surf I managed to find some fun, head high rights at one of my favorite ‘secret’ spots here in So Cal, (some DO still exist believe it or not!)… Continue reading »

The Health Sponsorship Council in New Zealand is using guilt in their latest ad campaign to remind parents of their responsibility to protect their children’s health.
With the parents of pre-teen children as their target, the Council is using blame and guilt and they’re making no apologies for the tone of the advertisements which point out that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in New Zealand. Continue reading »

The first thing you need is the right length surfboard. Most people make the mistake of trying to learn how to surf on a board that is too short. They see pros riding short boards and think that’s what they need. This is wrong and will only make you frustrated and give up trying to learn. Continue reading »
