Be Safe This Spring Break!

No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks… well for a week or so at least!

Yes, it’s that time of year when students all across the U.S. close their books and put on their bathing suits in search of warmer weather and a good time during their Spring Break vacations.

Of course we’re all for having a good time… but the bathing suit part… let’s just say we want to take a moment to remind you to be safe and protect your skin, (I bet that’s not what you thought we were going to say!).

With an estimated one million cases diagnosed annually, the occurrence of skin cancer in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. Since just one blistering sunburn, even during childhood, more than doubles the chances of developing melanoma, the importance of protecting yourself can’t be overstated.

Unfortunately this one week of negligence during your annual ‘fun-in-the-sun’ can play a significant role in increasing your chances of later developing skin cancer.

So along with the bikinis and boardshorts be sure to pack your sunscreen and rash guards.

When selecting a sunscreen make sure it’s at least sweatproof, (if not waterproof), has an SPF of AT LEAST 15 and provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays (read the label). Remember you need to re-apply it every couple of hours while you’re outside, (regardless if there are clouds – the UV rays go right through those puffs of water vapor in the sky).

For the ultimate protection be sure to wear some UV protective clothing like one of our rash guard shirts or Stay Dry shirts when you’re in or around the water. They provide SPF 150+ protection that WON’T WASH OFF!

We’ve got fashionable mens rash guards, womens rash guards and even kids rash guards so you can protect the whole family, (if you’re stuck spending Spring Break with your family and not your frat bros…).

So go have some fun… just protect yourselves… you’ll be happy you did. :-)

Surfers’ Hall of Fame to Honor Extraordinary Watermen this July

PRESS RELEASE

What started as a glint in Surfers’ Hall of Fame founder Aaron Pai’s eye nearly 15 years ago is now an internationally recognized tourism destination and permanent tribute to surfing culture. The nation’s first imprint collection of legendary surfers celebrates its 11th anniversary in July by honoring an extraordinary group of waterman including Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach, Sean Collins and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25 in front of Huntington Surf & Sport (corner of PCH and Main in Huntington Beach, CA).

“Advancements in the sport of ‘Big Wave Surfing’ during the past ten years played a prominent role in the selection of this year’s inductees,” said Pai. “Together Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach and Sean Collins have played significant roles in pioneering this new frontier. The chemistry and camaraderie among the three has helped redefine the sport.”

Pai added, “Sean Collins has literally transformed the way surfers chase waves around the world. From Huntington Beach to Mexico and Fiji, the entire surf industry has come to rely on his expertise in surf forecasting.” Continue reading »

Rip Curl Converts Taylor Knox’s Truck to a ‘Veggie Oil-Powered’ Machine

PRESS RELEASE
Costa Mesa, CA

Known for setting the standard on power hacks and rail gouges in the water, Rip Curl’s Taylor Knox has taken on the task of trying to set a new standard: this time on land. Instead of whining about high prices at the pump, Knox stepped up and converted his diesel-powered Ford F-250 truck into a veggie oil powered machine.

With the financial help of major sponsor Rip Curl, the crew at Grease not Gas performed the procedure at an estimated cost of $3,700. They installed the necessary filters, pumps and a tank that holds 73 gallons of veggie oil.

“It’s incredible,” says Knox. “I’ve only had to fill up a few times since I had it done. There are a lot of places I can go to do it, but I like to go to the Hill Street Café in Oceanside. I transfer all their unwanted grease into the tank, and I’m good to go. After all these years of driving, I can finally get behind the wheel knowing that I’m doing my part.”

Rip Curl USA Marketing Director, Dylan Slater, shares Taylor’s enthusiasm. “It’s unreal having a team rider like Taylor who will take the initiative on something like this. I really hope this inspires people. Any Rip Curl team rider who wants to convert their ride to run on veggie oil, we are going to financially help them get it done- it’s that important.”

Being the only ASP World Tour surfer to make the eco-friendly conversion, Taylor hopes this is infectious to his fellow surfers. “You get that initial investment back in saved fuel costs so fast,” said Knox. “If you have a diesel engine, there’s really no excuse. Who wouldn’t want free fuel?”

For more information on how to convert your vehicle, log onto www.GreaseNotGas.com, and for more info on Taylor Knox, visit www.ripcurl.com.

Rash Guards Help Save Coral Reefs

So there’s a new study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, that says sunscreen is killing the world’s coral reefs!

According to the study, the chemicals contained in most sunscreens, (paraben, cinnamate, benzophenone, and a camphor derivative), are the culprits.

The answer is to use sunscreens that block the sun’s UV rays by reflection, (such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide), other types of ‘eco-friendly’ sunscreens and of course rash guards. :-)

You can read the article at the National Geographic News website.

Aaron Napoleon Wins Ku Ikaika Challenge

paddle surfing rash guard

Revered Hawaiian waterman, Aaron Napoleon, (Pearl City, Oahu, 41), won the Ku Ikaika Challenge, the world’s first big-wave stand-up surfing contest, in perfect 15′-30′ Makaha surf on Valentine’s Day 2008.

The first place winner’s check of $4,000 was presented on his behalf to the West Side Junior Lifeguard Foundation. Every surfer in the main event received an equal prize check of $350.

Napoleon surfed through a total of five rounds to win the all-Hawaiian final, charging hard through every round and posting one of the event’s two perfect 10 point rides with a huge barrel. Second place was won by 24-year-old Keoni Keaulana (Waianae, Oahu), who was the top-performing member of the highly represented and respected Keaulana family of Makaha. Third place went to big-wave specialist Ikaika Kalama (Waialua, Oahu), and fourth was Kamu Auwae (Waianae, Oahu).

As the oldest competitor in the final at 41, Napoleon had a lifetime of ocean knowledge to draw from as the product of one of Hawaii’s best known ocean-going families. A top-performer over the years in every salt-water sport on offer, Napoleon attributed his success to good genes and just wanting to have fun.

Ku Ikaika is Hawaiian for “Stand Strong”. The name for this event came from the name of the non-profit foundation established last year by supporting sponsor of this event, C4 Waterman. The Ku Ikaika Foundation was established to shine a light on the youth that it encourages to stand strong and make strong, positive choices in life.

Action Alert – Santa Monica Plastic Bag Ban Hearing

On Tuesday, February 19th, the City of Santa Monica, CA, will vote on drafting a groundbreaking ordinance to ban the use of plastic, single-use bags.

In recent months other cities in California along with cities in China, Australia, France, and Britain, have adopted comprehensive bag bans so why not Santa Monica?!? South Africa, Ireland and Bangladesh are among the nations that have agreed to eliminate or heavily tax plastic shopping bags.

Why Ban Plastic Bags?

  • Each year, approximately 6 billion plastic bags are consumed in Los Angeles County. This is equivalent to 600 bags per person per year. Nationwide, 60,000 plastic bags are used every five seconds – that’s just ridiculous!!
  • Approximately 150,000 tons of plastic bags are disposed by Los Angeles County residents each year.
  • Disposable bags cost our cities up to 17 cents per bag for disposal.
  • Plastic bags are made from petroleum. Americans use over 380 billion bags every year, throwing away millions of barrels of oil.
  • 100,000 marine animals are killed annually by entanglement in marine debris such as plastic bags.
  • Alternatives such as reusable bags are readily available and affordable.

Heal the Bay is urging people to attend the rally and Santa Monica City Council hearing on February 19th. Whether you are planning to attend the hearing or not, they’re asking us to send a letter so they can further demonstrate to the City Council that the public wants this ban on plastic bags.

And remember: rash guards save you from using sunscreen and the plastic bottles it comes in. :-P

Makaha Ku Ikaika Challenge Waiting One More Day

The Ku Ikaika Challenge didn’t start yesterday as the swell fell short of the 20-foot wave face requirement.

Contestants and organizers agreed to wait for the larger swell forecast for this Thursday, Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Competitors have come from California, Australia, Tahiti, and the Hawaiian Islands for this event, the world’s first big-wave international stand up paddle surfing competition.

Actor Speaks Out About Skin Cancer

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ actor Eric Dane, who plays Dr. Mark Sloan, aka Dr. McSteamy, spoke with OK! Magazine about his recent experience with skin cancer. Dane told OK! that he went to see his dermatologist, who alerted him to the “malignant tissue caused by sun damage.”

After treatments involving liquid nitrogen, 35 year old Dane is pointing out the need to be vigilant about proper skin care and UV protection: “This is probably something that happened so long ago, but you passed the point of no return with this stuff … I wasn’t so vigilant then, I am now. And I think everybody should be.”

As we all know skin cancer is caused by cumulative damage from the sun that starts in childhood. That carefree summer you spent getting burned while you were at scout camp could become skin cancer later on.

We want you to be smart and be safe… protect you children with our full line of kids rash guards.

Trestles Saved By California Coastal Commission!

UPDATE – After a 12-hour marathon meeting, the California Coastal Commission voted 8-2 to protect Trestles, San Onofre State Beach and the San Mateo campground by rejecting plans for the 241 Foothill-South Toll Road – right on!!!

Over 3,000 people showed up at the hearing and Commissioners were inundated with letters and phone calls urging them to do the right thing for our coast.

Their vote to preserve and protect a beautiful piece of California’s remaining open space, endangered species and coastal resources was a slap in the face to money hungry corporate developers. Of course these money hungry corporate developers are going to appeal this decision so the fight is not entirely over, but this CCC vote will definitely make it harder.

Hawaiian Claims Monster Energy Pro Title

mens rash guard photo

They were finally able to complete the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro yesterday and Hawaii’s own Pancho Sullivan took the title for a second time.

Held in 6′-8′ surf at Backdoor Pipe, Sullivan posted a perfect 10-point tube ride as well as the highest heat score of the event – 18.75 points out of 20, in the 30-minute final.

The win earned Pancho $7,000 and 875 World Qualifying Series ratings points. Pancho first won this event back in 2005, a result that catapulted him onto the elite ASP World Championship Tour (WCT).

It was an all-Hawaii affair with 2nd and 3rd place going to fellow Hawaiians Fred Patacchia ($3,500 and 14.25 points) and Roy Powers ($2,500 and 9.1 points) respectively, with Dustin Barca fourth ($2,000 and 6.5 points).

The Association of Surfing Professionals now heads to Australia for the start of the World Championship Tour. The next professional event in Hawaii will be next winter.

(… hey Pancho, is that one our mens rash guards you’re wearing?) :-P

Energy From Waves May Light Hawaii Homes

When I read this I thought Holy Smokes – clean, renewable energy from the ocean – this could be cool!

The technical name for this is: hydrokinetic technology.

The non-technical, easy to understand version is this: an Australian company, called ‘Oceanlinx’, wants to build some offshore floating platforms about a mile off the island of Maui that will rise up and down with the action of the swells to compress and displace air in a chamber. This compressed air is used to drive a turbine that converts the motion to electricity. The platform would be about the size of a large truck and cables would take the electricity to power substations onshore.

The plan being proposed for Maui would generate about 2.7 megawatts of power which would usually be enough power for about 2700 households BUT since swells rise and fall, so will the output. Still, this power combined with other renewable sources such as wind could help reduce Maui’s reliance on crude oil, (and all the yucky things that come with that!).

We’ll keep you posted. :-)

Shameless plug: remember, when you’re in or around the ocean be sure to wear a rash guard to protect your precious skin. :-P
