Surfrider Foundation Victory in North Carolina!

The Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation deserves a big shout out for successfully aiding the city of Wrightsville Beach, NC, in their struggle to keep Access 33 open to the public so the public can have a pathway to the beach. After two year’s of negotiations, the parties involved were finally able to come to an agreement and the Cape Fear Chapter donated $15,000 to help close the deal!

Don’t Piss Off Governor Schwarzenegger!

As we wrote about in our post ‘ Trestles Saved By California Coastal Commission! ‘, the Governator was handed a major defeat last month when the California Coastal Commission voted to protect San Onofre State Beach and the San Mateo campground and rejected plans for the 241 Foothill-South Toll Road through the parks, which the Gov had supported.

Well, I guess Arnold got pissed and last week he booted his brother-in-law, Bobby Shriver, and actor Clint Eastwood off a state parks commission that also voted to oppose the controversial toll road.

This may make thinks tough around the Schwarzenegger/Shriver household during the holidays this year! I hope Arnold thought this one through as Maria may withhold a little something-something from her boy Arnold for firing her bro….

Shriver and Eastwood served salary-free on the State Park and Recreation Commission which is charged with approving plans for California’s parks and recommending ways to protect and develop the system.

I guess these guys had a brain and felt the same as many residents that putting a 6 lane toll road through a beautiful and much-used state park was a bad idea… but not the Governator!

Shriver said he was bummed that he could no longer work to protect our park system from developers and said, “It shows you how strong these developers were that were able to arm-wrestle the governor into firing us”.

Who’s the girly-man now, Arnold?!?

Stephanie Gilmore Crowned Queen of 2008 Rip Curl Women’s Pro

Stepanie Gilmore Wins Rip Curl Pro

The second event on the ASP Womens World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro, was won yesterday by reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia.

Gilmore shredded in clean four-to-six foot surf at Bells Beach today on her way to the crown.

Although 2004 ASP Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), was the leader for the most of the final, Gilmore stroked into a solid Bells breaker with five minutes remaining and stylishly combined a series of floaters and top turns to score the day’s high single-wave score of a 9.33 out of a possible 10.

Yesterday’s victory marks the second consecutive Rip Curl Women’s Pro win for Gilmore, who jumps from 9th to 2nd in the standings.

Hawaiian Cruise Ship Now Floating Toxic Waste

While we don’t always agree with the Environmental Protection Agency, especially when they tell us Californians we’re going TOO far in our pollution control efforts, we do have to say we agree with their latest efforts to stop a couple of ship brokers from trying to sail a former cruise ship overseas so they can scrap it despite the presence of cancer-causing chemicals in some of the materials built into it.

On March 18th the EPA issued a complaint against two ship brokers for exporting the PCB-containing materials that are part of the MV Oceanic, formerly known as the SS Independence, which is now being shipped overseas on a final voyage to be scrapped. The ship regularly sailed the Hawaiian Islands for American Hawaii Cruises in the 1980s and 1990s.

Apparently the export of PCB materials from the United States is a violation of the EPA’s Toxic Substances Control Act so the EPA wants to start fining them something like $32,000 per day and get the ship returned to the US so it can be cleaned up before it’s scraped.

Surfer Health Study Kicks Off in Santa Cruz, CA

Ever wonder if the red tide you surfed in last week is related to the sinus infection you got this week?

Well the folks over at UC Berkeley are wondering the same thing and have launched a study that examines the correlation between water quality, bacterial levels, red tides, and health symptoms of Santa Cruz County surfers.

If you live in the Santa Cruz area, surf “good waves” at least 30 minutes a week and have access to a computer you can take part in this important study.

Contact surferhealth@gmail.com to get started or go to their Surfer’s Health blog.

You could even win some cool surf gear and cash prizes up to $500. Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing to win gift certificates to local surf shops or cash ($500, $250, $100, $50). Every time you complete a survey you get entered into the drawing. The drawing will take place at the end of the study.

Beach Clean Up – Join Heal the Bay at Dockweiler beach

If you live in Los Angeles get up off the couch this Saturday, March 15th, and do something good for one of your local beaches: volunteer with Heal the Bay for one of their monthly ‘Nothin But Sand’ beach clean ups!

This month they’re tackling Playa del Rey at Tower 49 near Dockweiler Beach State Park. Map & directions.

The beach clean up runs 10am-Noon and is open to all. This is a great opportunity for you and your friends to get involved! Volunteers must be 12 years old or accompanied by a parent.

There’s a slight chance of showers in the forecast so if it is raining steadily at the start time, the cleanup will be canceled. However, if the rain has stopped or it is just raining lightly, the cleanup will continue as scheduled.

As you know, we like to stress that you protect your skin while you’re outside and remind you that you can get a sunburn EVEN when it’s cloudy, so don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and some UV protective clothing like one of our Dry Shirts.

Todd Pearson Wins Wal-Mart Fishing League

On Saturday March 1st, fisherman Todd Pearson, of Anderson, S.C., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Savannah River Division tournament on Clarks Hill Lake.

He won with a five-bass catch weighing a total of 19lbs, 13 oz. The win netted Pearson $4,270 plus a $753 Ranger contingency bonus and put him a step closer to qualifying for the Lake Seminole Regional Championship in Bainbridge, Ga., Oct. 16-18, where he could win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

Pearson said he caught his bass on a deep-diving crankbait at the mouth of a cove on the main lake points.

“The fish were shallow early,” said Pearson. “I was using a stop-and-go retrieve and letting it fall down in the grass. Later in the day, I was catching pockets on a jerk bait where were suspended in 18- 20 feet of water in the tree tops.”

When you’re out fishing be sure to wear our line of StayDry shirts to keep dry when there’s water spray or you’re unhooking a lunker. These dry shirts also provide superior UV protection while you’re on the water. :-)

Kelly Slater Wins Quicksilver Pro – Regains #1 Ranking

Kelly Slater wins Quicksilver Pro Surfing
Quicksilver Pro winner Kelly Slater

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2008) – Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) is once again the world’s #1 surfer after beating reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) at his home break of Snapper Rocks.

Slater defeated Fanning 17.94 to 15.23 to claim his second Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast title and position himself atop the ratings for the first time since claiming his last ASP World Crown in 2006.

“It’s really satisfying,” Slater said. “I didn’t feel like I really got into motion last year. Obviously Trestles was good with a win, but the end of the year was pretty lackluster for me. Even getting into the Quarters today I was thinking, ‘This is the best result I’ve had in six months’ It just felt great.” Continue reading »
