Protect Your Skin with Tomatoes?

Tomatoes offer UV protection

Seems British researchers are claiming that as little as five tablespoons per day of tomato paste may protect skin from premature aging and skin cancer!

In their study, the British researchers had 10 volunteers consume approximately 55 grams of standard tomato paste and 10 grams of olive oil each day. A separate group of 10 participants consumed only the olive oil.

Three months later, samples from the group who consumed the tomato paste showed a 33% greater protection against sunburn and much higher levels of procollagen, a molecule in the skin that provides structure and firmness.

“The tomato diet boosted the level of procollagen in the skin significantly. These increasing levels suggest potential reversal of the skin aging process,” Professor Lesley Rhodes, a dermatologist at the University of Manchester, told BBC News.

However, some warned that the study was small and that tomatoes should be seen as a “helpful addition” rather than an alternative to sunscreen and UV protective clothing.

Forget the plastic surgery… Pass the pasta please. :-)

Free Cancer Screening in Portland, Oregon Today

Free head and neck cancer screening is being held today in the lobby of the Center for Health & Healing, 3303 S.W. Bond St., in Portland’s south waterfront. It runs until 4 p.m., is open to anyone and no appointments are necessary.

Oral, head and neck cancers continues to rise and they account for nearly 7 percent of the cancers diagnosed in the United States every year. Early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment. Signs of head and neck cancer can include: a sore in the mouth or on the skin that doesn’t go away; a long-standing, worsening sore throat or trouble swallowing; a change in the voice or a growth in the neck. Tobacco and alcohol use are the most important risk factors.

The free screening and awareness day is part of a nationwide oral, head and neck cancer awareness week sponsored by the Yul Brynner Head and Neck Cancer Foundation, Inc. The actor died in 1985 of lung cancer after overcoming a pre-malignant growth on his larynx.

Pick Up Your Butts

Last year, on a single day in September, 387,000 volunteers scoured 33,000 miles of coastline in 76 countries and found 6 MILLION POUNDS of trash and debris!

Last week the Ocean Conservancy released it’s report detailing the findings and besides showing us how we’re being careless slobs it showed that the #1 item found on our beaches and shorelines are cigarette butts.

No wonder more and more beaches are banning smoking – it’s with good reason. C’mon people… get your butts into the trash, not the sand!!!

Here’s a chart of their findings:
Trash Report

All we can add is: go green with a rash guard… you’ll use less sunscreen and the plastic bottles they come in. :-)

Go Green Where You Sleep

Who knew you could be green where you sleep??

While searching the internet we came across a cool site we thought we’d pass along: Environmentally Friendly Hotels

It’s a searchable database of hotels, inns, lodges, resorts and b&b’s that proclaim one way or another that they are “green”.

Properties are selected not only because of green issues that you can easily see and experience during your visit, but also some issues that are less visible, like being active in and responsible to the community, (donating to charity, environmental education efforts, hiring locals, etc).

Properties are not only reviewed and added by the website but they also encourage travelers to recommend places they’ve found themselves in an effort to get people participating, reviewing and adding to their directory of green lodging.

They have a couple of ways to search the directory. Their “Basic Search” lets you specify either a property name or location. Their “Advanced Search” allows you to look for specific green issues, along with a location or property name.

One more small, yet simple thing you can do to help us all – The next time you start to book your next vacation check for an environmentally friendly hotel. :-)

Is No Water Safe?

When we talk about water pollution the first thing that comes to our minds here at Buy-Rash-Guards is, of course, the ocean. Whether we’re surfing, sailing, snorkeling, fishing or whatever… we’re on or in the ocean.

We know things are bad in the sea but now new research has shown that the drinking water flowing out of our faucets and that we’ve so shamelessly taken for granted may be harming us right in our homes!

A recent Associated Press investigation shows that America’s drinking water contains various levels of prescription drugs such as antibiotics, mood stabilizers and sex hormones, along with over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

As part of a 5-month inquiry the investigative team reviewed hundreds of scientific reports, visited environmental study sites and treatment plants, analyzed federal drinking water databases, and interviewed more than 230 academics, officials and scientists.

You can read all about the prescription drugs found in our drinking water here…

Save California’s State Parks from Governator Schwarzenegger

As we wrote about previously, California’s ‘Governator Aaaanold’ has this dumb idea to close 48 of California’s state parks, (which include some beaches), in an effort to help with the state’s budget crisis.

His ridiculous proposal has sparked a grassroots campaign called “Save Our State Parks”, (SOS). Launched by the California State Parks Foundation (CSPF), SOS has been joined by dozens of statewide and local organizations, (including local governments), to fight the Governor’s 2008 budget proposal to close 48 California state parks and reduce lifeguard staffing on 16 state beaches. His lame proposal will only save $13.3 million, a tiny portion of the state’s deficit.

“The Governor’s proposal to close 48 state parks will have a profound effect on the environment, preservation of our state’s historic treasures, tourism and the local economies that depend on our state parks” said Elizabeth Goldstein, CSPF President. “The Save Our State Parks campaign brings together stakeholders to oppose the Governor’s proposed budget cuts with a unified voice.”

If you’re one of the over 77 million people who visited a state park last year please take a minute to join the over 95,000 people who have become members of SOS. Don’t worry, they’re not asking for money… just some time and effort to do things like contact local officials, attend rallies, etc. They’ve even got a cool page on their website where they’re asking people to share stories about their experiences at state parks.

Stop the ‘Terminator’ from taking away our sources of fun, relaxation, recreation and beauty!!

Ikea Joins Plastic Bag Ban

First we reported that Whole Foods was dumping plastic bags – now it seems uber furniture and home decor giant IKEA is doing the same!

Last March 2007, IKEA set a goal of reducing its US stores’ plastic bag consumption by 50%; from 70 million to 35 million plastic bags within 1 year. The goal was to go reusable with the iconic IKEA blue bag for $.59 or use an alternative reusable bag. IKEA also said if that was not an acceptable solution, IKEA plastic bags could be purchased for $.05, with all proceeds going to American Forests (the nation’s oldest non-profit citizens conservation organization) to plant trees to restore forests and help reduce CO2 emissions.

Well, it seems their ‘Ban the Bag’ program was such a success, with more than 92% of their customers saying no more plastic bags, that IKEA will be taking another green step forward: as of October 1, 2008, IKEA will no longer offer plastic OR paper bags. IKEA’s consumer call-to-action is to use only reusable bags.

From the $.05 donations they received for every plastic throw-away bag that was used, American Forests will plant over 300,000 trees!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. consumes over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps each year. Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags, and less than one percent of them are recycled. Single-use bags made of high-density polyethylene are the main culprit. Once brought into existence to tote purchases, they will accumulate and persist on our planet for up to a thousand years. Paper bags are also not the best alternative: stacking 10 pallets of paper bags is equivalent to one pallet of plastic, thus increasing the CO2 footprint. And it takes 14 billion trees to produce 10 billion grocery bags.

Go IKEA – let’s thank them and encourage other companies to do the same and GO GREEN!
