Brown Goes Green

UPS Hybrid Trucks

We’re happy to announced that the shipping company we use, (UPS – better known as “Brown”), has just placed a huge order for hybrid electric and compressed natural gas trucks to add to their delivery fleet!

UPS will be purchasing 200 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) – the largest commercial order of such trucks by any company – in addition to another 300 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles for its U.S. delivery fleet.

The purchase of the 500 additional vehicles means the UPS alternative fuel fleet – already the largest such private fleet in the United States – will grow 30 percent from 1,718 to 2,218 low-carbon vehicles.

What UPS affectionately calls it’s ‘Green Fleet’ includes electric, hybrid electric (HEV), compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and propane-powered vehicles and operates in the United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The 200 hybrid electric vehicles will be deployed in 2009 and join 50 HEV delivery trucks already in operation. The 200 trucks are expected to save 176,000 gallons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,786 metric tons each year.

The 300 CNG vehicles will be deployed later this year and join more than 800 such vehicles already in use in the United States. CNG vehicles run on natural gas, a cost-effective, clean-burning and readily available fuel. These vehicles are expected to yield a 20 percent reduction in emissions over the cleanest diesel engines available today.

So now you can feel even better about shopping with us – you save fuel and UPS saves the environment – GO BROWN!!

Don’t Just Recycle – Freecycle!

A friend of ours told us about a great website that hooks up people who want to get rid of stuff with people who live in the same town and want free stuff. It’s called FreeCycle.org and they’re all about reuse and keeping perfectly useful things out of landfills.

According to their website they have over 5 million members all across the globe exchanging things that may have otherwise ended up in landfills. The group is not-for-profit and membership is free. It’s run by a volunteer moderator in each town and you can participate either by emails or checking/posting to their message board.

We put it to the test last week while cleaning out our office… first we uncovered a stack of about 30 old computer design magazines from 2001 that at one time had provided us with creative ideas and some software tutorials. We posted what we had to our local FreeCycle message board and within a day we had 3 people interested in them. The next morning we left them in a box outside our door and somebody happily picked them up with us even having to be here!

A couple of days later, (and still cleaning out our office), we came across a perfectly good but unneeded router and some old software… posted it to the message board and in a couple of hours another person came by and took them off our hands!

What’s great is that if a person wants what you’ve got they have to come to you, so you don’t have to change your schedule or go out of your way at all. I do have to say I have to watch myself so I don’t start collecting other peoples stuff, (you can find some useful and unusual items – from old books and appliances to offers to come pick a person’s overloaded fruit tree!) :-P

Now we’re actively looking for things we can get rid of because we know it will be used by someone and we won’t feel guilty or have to figure out when or where the next e-waste collection is.

Like the saying goes…”one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” and the more of that ‘junk’ we can keep out of our landfills the better. :-)

Save San Onofre State Beach with a Click of Your Mouse!

This just in from the California State Parks Foundation:

San Onofre State Beach needs our help!

The toll road backers in Orange County are appealing to the federal government to override the Coastal Commission and get special approval to build their toll road through San Onofre State Beach.

Click here and take 30 seconds to send a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, urging him to deny the toll road appeal.

You’ll remember that on February 6, the California Coastal Commission voted overwhelmingly to deny federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) consistency certification for the Foothill-South Toll Road. The hearing lasted 14 hours and was packed with over 3,500 people. At the end of the day, the Commission voted 8-2 to oppose consistency certification for the road, finding that it violated virtually every provision of the state’s Coastal Act.

But the TCA has appealed that strong decision to the U.S. Department of Commerce and is working to overturn the Commission’s ruling. The Secretary of Commerce will be making a final decision on the appeal and needs to hear from you!

Park supporters need to make their voices heard. Help us tell decision-makers in Washington D.C. that the federal government and the current Administration cannot overturn the Coastal Commission’s clear and thoughtful decision on this matter.

Please send a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, urging him to deny the toll road appeal. Public comments will be accepted until May 28 – tell your friends and family to send a letter supporting San Onofre State Beach, too!

Harley Ingleby – 2008 Oxbow Longboard Champion

2008 Oxbow Winner Harley Ingleby

Sunday, May 11th, Harley Ingleby of Australia, (shown above wearing a bright red rash guard shirt), was crowned Oxbow World Longboard Tour champion in fun two to three foot waves at Les Dunes, France. The win gives Ingleby the lead in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Longboard Tour (WLT) ratings.

Ingleby, 24, who defeated rising French star Antoine Delpero at his home beach, won the 35-minute final cheered by the Australian contingent in front of a numerous French crowd. Ingleby, who defeated reigning ASP World Longboard Champion Phil Rajzman (BRA) in the semifinals, posted a solid 16.65 point heat tally to best Delpero’s 14.50 point score (both out of a possible 20) in the last heat of the week.

“I am the happiest kid in the world right now,” Ingleby said. “I had a very testing semifinal against Phil and that win gave me a lot of confidence for the final. I found the better waves against Antoine (Delpero) and it ends up just perfectly for me in the final.” Ingleby betters the equal 5th place he got last year at Anglet and now stands as a potential 2008 ASP World Longboard Champion before the final stop in California next November.

“It is really good to have this second event this year,” Ingleby said. “Right now I will just enjoy this one and celebrate with the Australians and will start thinking of the next event later. So stoked to grab it.”

Holy Crap! Man Bags 92lb Carp

Some guy who can’t eat fish because he’s allergic to them, just caught a 92lb carp with a bow and arrow on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River!!

After he shot the thing they had a wrestling match on the shore… According to hunter/fisherman Darin Opel “It was real heavy, like lifting a refrigerator,” said Opel, who ripped his jeans on the arrow sticking from the back of the carp’s head during the ruckus. “Once he got out of the water, he started fighting hard. He beat me up pretty good. He definitely got a few licks in.”

Beaches Resorts Selects American Wave Machines for New Waterpark

American Wave Machines, Inc., (AWM) an innovator in artificial wave technology, announced today that Beaches Resorts has selected the SurfStream standing wave machine for its new waterpark installation at its Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa.

The SurfStream standing wave attraction will be a major feature of the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa’s popular Pirate’s Island Waterpark, which is being expanded to ten times its initial size. SurfStream is the first and only high capacity standing wave machine that delivers real surfing and wave riding capabilities. With wave adjustability, which translates to operational flexibility for the waterpark, SurfStream gives both novices and seasoned surfers the most sought after surfing experience — the long ride.? Because the water moves at natural, gravity-fed speed, it is safe to have several people riding at once, even riding next to each other. This significantly increases throughput, capacity, and fun.

“We’re excited to work with Beaches Resorts to create a one-of-a-kind surf experience for their guests,”? said Bruce McFarland, president of AWM. “SurfStream gives people the experience of real surfing, which will give their guests a thrilling attraction and surely keep their visitors coming back.”

This new waterpark expansion is part of the resorts comprehensive $125 million development that will include a brand new Italian Village. Scheduled to be completed in Winter of 2008, this new Italian Village will feature 180 luxurious family suites with the finest amenities and services. The brand new Pirates Island waterpark will adorn the property and will measure ten times the size of the original. The themed aqua-playground will include nine water slides, a pool and aqua play area complete with water cannons, cranks and spray features, a splash deck with pop-up jets, and a winding lazy river. Families can choose to unwind in the nearby piazza area or watch the littlest swimmers frolic in the zero-entry pool for tots.

“When we learned that SurfStream provides an experience close to actual ocean surfing, we had to include it in the waterpark expansion at Beaches. Our goal is to offer the most exciting variety of waterpark activities available anywhere,” said Adam Stewart, CEO of Beaches Resorts. “SurfStream will give our guests an exciting ride that they will long remember.”

Sounds like fun – all we can add is: don’t forget to protect your skin with some UV protective clothing!
