Action Alert: Tell Congress Not to Allow Drilling Off Our Coasts

This in from the Natural Resources Defense Council, (NRDC): Offshore drilling would not significantly lower gas prices or solve the energy crisis. Instead of more drilling, we need real, long-term solutions that will end our dependence on oil once and for all.

Legendary oil-man, T. Boone Pickens is for getting off our addiction to oil and has a plan to get us off the oil and on to alternative energy.

Even W’s daddy, Bush senior, was against offshore drilling!!

Sam’s Club Offering Solar Products

While we despise Wal-Mart for it’s anti-American practice of importing billions of dollars of products, (and exporting the manufacturing jobs that go with them), instead of sticking to Sam’s original premise of only buying American – we do have to give credit where it’s do as Wal-Mart adds solar products to it’s stores in California.

Sam’s Club, (the wholesale division of Wal-Mart), is teaming up with Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading designer and installer of solar electric power systems, and BP Solar, a leading provider of photovoltaic solar panels, to provide in-store informational kiosks to promote the long-term benefits of solar energy. The display explains how solar power works, the design and installation process, how much energy can be saved, the typical cost of a system and all available incentives and rebates. Through this partnership, purchasers are also entitled to a significant discount on the cost of their solar energy system, saving an average of $500 or more in addition to receiving all applicable federal, state and local rebates and tax credits.

It’s a small step but we have to give credit where it’s due…

Olympic Sailing Regatta – GBR Wins Silver

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield, British sailing’s undisputed kings of the comeback, have won their second successive 470 men’s silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Regatta in Qingdao on Monday, August 18th.

The Brits’ quest to claw back the points they needed to land silver didn’t look promising at the first mark, rounding in ninth with the French in second.

But Rogers and Glanfield held on and steadily ground down the rest of the fleet to take a dramatic medal race third, with the French trailing in sixth and the Dutch seventh, meaning the Brits leapfrogged their rivals to clinch a thrilling silver medal.

Screen Your Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal and not all people should use them the same way.

There’s plenty of debate about the safety and effectiveness of today’s popular sunscreens, how and when to use them and whether the chemicals they contain are safe or potentially deadly.

Four out of five name-brand sunscreens contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or offer inadequate protection, according to the second annual sunscreen summary by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit environmental research organization.

Leading brands – Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena – were the worst offenders, according to the group, which recommended 143 products at cosmeticsdatabase.com.

Only 15% of 952 products analyzed met EWG’s criteria for safety and effectiveness: blocking both UVA and UVB radiation, remaining stable in sunlight, and containing few if any ingredients with significant known or suspected health hazards.

The EWG recommends avoiding sunscreens containing the commonly used chemical oxybenzone out of concern that it can disrupt hormones, cause allergic reactions and damage cells.

“It’s one of the most absorbed sunscreen blockers, which wouldn’t necessarily be a concern, but it has high toxicity issues,” said EWG senior analyst Sonya Lunder.

Many products on the market bear claims that are considered “unacceptable” or misleading under FDA’s draft sunscreen safety standards. Claims like “all day protection,” “mild as water,” and “blocks all harmful rays” are not true, yet are found on bottles. Until FDA sets an effective date for these standards, industry is free to use hyped claims.

Want to know how safe your sunscreen really is? Want to know which products are safe to use? Checkout their 2008 Sunscreen Safety Guide.

Of course we here at Buy-Rash-Guards believe strongly in protecting ourselves form the harmful UV rays of the sun AND lowering our exposure to harmful chemicals found in sunscreens – that’s why we offer a line of rash guard shirts that will provide you with SPF 150+ protection that won’t wash off, breakdown in sunlight or cause your body to absorb harmful chemicals.

You can use our rashguards in conjunction with a safe and effective sunscreen to safely lower your exposure to the UVA and UVB rays of the sun that cause skin cancer.

Keeping Up With JUNK

If you haven’t heard about JUNK then you’re in for a treat!

JUNK is a raft of sorts made from 15,000 discarded plastic bottles. It’s a project launched by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation to bring awareness to the huge problem of plastics in our ocean.

Back on June 1, 2008 JUNK set off from Long Beach, CA to float it’s way to Hawaii. They figured the trip would take about 6 weeks but now they’ve revised it to 10-12 weeks!

Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal are the 2 hardy sailors aboard her and you can follow their expedition here on their blog.

Plastics in the ocean is becoming a deadly problem as plastic ingested by fish is making it’s way into OUR food chain.

There are areas in the ocean, specifically the North Pacific Gyre, (or ‘Garbage Patch’ as it’s affectionately named), where the amount of plastic in the water outnumbers the amount of plankton in the water!
