Swimming With Turtles Can Make You Sick

This bit of info may surprise you, (it did surprise us here at Buy Rash Guards)… but did you know that salmonella in turtle feces can end up on their shells and body, and can spread to people who handle them?

In fact several people who swam with pet turtles in a backyard pool were among 107 people sickened in the largest salmonella outbreak blamed on turtles nationwide in the 2007-2008 season.

The outbreak that year involved mostly children in 34 states and 1/3 of all patients had to be hospitalized. In most cases, parents didn’t know that turtles can carry salmonella.

So it may actually be safer to swim with sharks than to swim with turtles!

Bargains in the Caribbean

The slump in travel can mean big savings and other bargains for those who can still afford to take advantage of them.

The Caribbean has been especially hard hit by the global travel slump this year and along with Latin America they’re going out of their way to attract tourists during the typically slow Fall travel season coupled with the ailing world economy.

One example is the “4th Night Free” promotion by the chain of SuperClubs all-inclusive resorts when guests book by Oct. 21 for travel between Nov. 1 and Dec. 22. The chain has properties in Jamaica, Curaçao, the Bahamas, Panama, and Brazil. For information on SuperClubs, call 1-800-467-8737 or check www.superclubs.com.

The Wyndham Nassau Resort in the Bahamas is offering reduced rates along with food and beverage credits for stays of three-nights or more. All-inclusive packages start at $194 per person per day, based on double occupancy, and include meals, drinks and other amenities. For information on Wyndham, call 1-800-WYNDHAM or check www.wyndham.com.

Of course if you decide to take advantage of these deals and go spend some time lounging on a tropical beach or two we here at Buy Rash Guards would be remiss if we didn’t remind you to take along one of our rash guard swim shirts or other UV protective clothing to protet your skin and keep the harmful UV rays of the sun at bay while you’re sipping your mai tai with your toes in the sand.  :-P

Skin Cancer May Be In Your Genes

We all know that wearing a rash guard shirt and sunscreen are both terrific ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays and help prevent skin cancer, but some people may need to be extra vigilant if they have a family history of skin cancer.

A pair of studies recently released found that some types of skin cancer can be inherited.

One study found that if you have an identical twin with melanoma your risk of developing the disease is much higher than having a fraternal twin with this type of skin cancer. The other study found that if you have a sibling or parent with one of several different types of non-melanoma cancers that your skin cancer increased risk as well.

Even if you don’t have a family history of skin cancer you should still take precautions to protect your skin because you don’t want to be the first in your family to get it – so always wear a brimmed hat, UV protective clothing and   whenever you’re out in the sun.  :-)

Talia Gangini in Stand Up Paddle Top 10

Talia Gangini took 8th place last week in Rainbow Sandal’s annual Gerry Lopez ‘Battle of the Paddle’ held at Doheny Beach, CA. The win placed her in the top 10 in the field of womens Stand Up Paddleboard racing

The event’s Elite Woman’s division race was by invite only and after the event Talia said, “It was a very tough event, but fun. You had to keep telling yourself you can do it. People and boards were flying everywhere. It was definitely the Battle of the Paddle”.

Gangini is no stranger to SUP. In 2007, at only 14 years old, she became the youngest woman to ever paddle the 32 mile Molokai to Oahu paddle board race on a team. She has achieved 1st place in several of Hawaii’s top races this year alone.

When asked what’s up next, Gangini said, “The next couple months I’ll be focusing on school, my jewelry line and designing new bikinis and just staying fit for the next event. There’s not too many on the horizon until the beginning of next year, but I’m sure something will pop up and I’m looking forward to it.”

Congrats to Talia!  :-)

3 Billion Plastic Bottles in California Alone!

Yes that’s THREE BILLION!

That’s how many plastic beverage bottles will be littered or landfilled in California this year. You see them in parks and on the roadsides.  And when those bottles make their way into the marine environment, they pose a serious and growing threat to marine wildlife as well as us when the degraded plastic makes it into the food chain, then into our bodies.

Senate Bill 402 is sitting on Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk and it would specifically target the more than 3 billion plastic beverage bottles that continue to be littered and landfilled every year in California. Existing law is already successfully recycling more than 6 billion plastic beverage bottles. And by closing exemption loopholes and increasing consumer recycling incentives, SB 402 will substantially increase that number, and help reduce plastic litter and waste.

But the Soft Drink Industry is urging the Governor to Veto SB 402. Local Governments, Environmental Groups and Recyclers are urging support.

We here at Buy Rash Guards are urging our customers in California to SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN! You can send a contribution to Californians Against Waste, which is leading the fight to promote recycling in California.  You can also send a letter to Governor Schwarzenegger by clicking here.
