Ewwww! What is a Rash Guard Anyway?

If you stumbled across our online store or this blog and have no idea what a rash guard is you may be thinking, “how weird”, or “that’s disgusting!”.

Don’t worry… we’ll explain what a rash guard is and after reading what we have to say you just may even want one! :-)

Rash guards, (also known as surf shirts, swim shirts, rashies and other names I probably haven’t heard of), are thin, tight-fitting shirts made of a lycra/nylon blend.

They’re designed to provide rash, abrasion and UV protection in and around the water. They can vary in SPF rating but our rash guards are some of the highest rated shirts, providing SPF 150+, (UPF 50+), protection wet or dry – that’s higher than any sunscreen on the market today.

Rash guard shirts fit skin tight so they stay put in the water and surfers have been wearing them for decades to protect their skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun as well as from painful rashes that can develop from laying and rubbing on their surfboards.

With all the dangers of skin cancer that have been discovered over the years, rashguards are no longer only being worn only by surfers but they are becoming a staple in many families arsenal of UV protection.

Cheaper, easier to use and longer lasting than any sunscreen, they’re perfect for the entire family and are especially great for kids who hate sitting still for their sunscreen application or getting out of the water for their re-application.

More recently and with the popularity of MMA and grappling, rashguards are now worn for skin protection in almost all forms of martial arts.

So… now you know rash guards are not something weird or disgusting but something helpful and protective that you and your family may actually want to use. :-)

O’Neill Cold Water Classic – Tasmania

The third day of competition at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic found itself at its third new location where surfing’s big names took to the water.

With conditions easing ever so slightly, contest director Matt Wilson chose Marrawah’s exposed Lighthouse Beach as the spot to finish off the Round of 96.

In this isolated northwest corner of Tasmania, the likes of Jordy Smith, Cory Lopez, Ben Dunn, aerial master Josh Kerr, and Damien Hobgood made the most of the powerful beachbreak.

There are high expectations for the 21-year-old South African surfing phenomenon, Jordy Smith, winner of this ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) tour two years ago, and he didn’t fail to disappoint, waiting until the second half of his heat to pull out his high scoring waves.

“It’s interesting being back on the ASP WQS,” Smith said, “because you can go through with 5’s. I can’t get away with that on the World Tour.”

This is the first time for Jordy on Australia’s island state, but he is fitting right into the Tasmanian waters,

“I met a few of the locals yesterday evening out in the water,” Smith said. “I was asking them how to get back because it was getting pretty dark and we were pretty far from anything. They were like, no worries catch a ride with us. It was crazy driving through the night with all the Tasmanian Devils about and stuff. We almost hit something the other day – I would have felt bad. We didn’t though, we stopped and let it cross the road.”

The heat of the day was a battle of spectacular young talent, with 19-year-old up-and-coming Australian star, Owen Wright taking it out ahead of Dusty Payne, Lincoln Taylor and Wiggoly Dantas.

“It was a pretty close heat,” Wright said. “The first day was incredible – the Bluff is an awesome wave. But it’s great it’s mobile. It keeps all the options open and you can get the best waves every day. I’ve been over to Tasmania before. But never to this corner. It’s a nice untouched place – it’s an awesome place to have an event.”

As Rob Bain, O’Neill’s Asia/Pacific Marketing Manager said, “It’s not just about the surfing here. We’ve had amazing waves and most of the surfers are discovering them for the first time ever. But this is also more like a road trip – it’s about the different experiences.”

Rash Guard Use in Men’s Sports

Here’s a great article we previously published but have been asked to re-post so here you go:

The following article will discuss the benefits of men’s rash guard use in competitive sports.

There are lots of sports that men compete in where rash guards should be considered an important part of their equipment.

Rash and UV protection are not only beneficial while participating in water sports such as surfing, body boarding, snorkeling and swimming, but also while fishing and boating as well as during contact sports such as martial arts.

A man is exposing his skin to harmful factors such as sunburns and irritating rash when competing in many of the competitive sports mentioned in the above paragraph. Wearing a rash guard will block harmful UV rays by providing SPF 150+ protection as well as provide a protective layer over his skin to eliminate any skin irritation.

A rashguard will give you more confidence and increase your sporting performance while protecting your skin. Without having to worry about sunburn and skin irritation you can remain focused on your sport and give your best performance possible.

Let’s take a look at the example of surfing. When men participate in surfing competitions, they are exposing their skin to several factors that can cause a rash, or other skin irritations including:
• continuous rubbing of his chest against the rough surface of his surf board
• prolonged exposure to the sun’s dangerous UV rays. Especially the back and shoulders
• prolonged exposure to the wind

A rash guard protects against sunburn and skin rash that is caused by all of these factors.

Rash guards are made from lycra material that is designed to block 97% of the sun’s UV rays and guard your skin with SPF 150+ protection while you’re surfing. Unlike any other sun block products rash guards do not need reapplication – their protection stays on in the water.

Men’s rash guards are available in short sleeve as well as long sleeve to provide the best protection you can get for whatever sport you’re playing.

Rash guards are an important piece of sporting equipment because they not only protect your skin but they also enhance your sporting performance. You can keep your head in the game and not have to worry about sunburn, irritating rash or having to remember to reapply your sun block.

Giant Sea Volcano Gets Marine Protected Status

While all of our surfing customers will be interested in this news, our surf brothers and sisters up in Northern California will be particularly intrigued:

After 7 years of planning and extensive public input, three marine sanctuaries off Central California issued a new joint management plan. The plan includes a 775 square mile expansion to include the Davidson Seamount, one of the largest known underwater mountains in U.S. coastal waters and home to a wide variety of marine species.

The management plan also includes prohibition of harmful discharges from cruise ships, restoration of the original limitation of motorized personal watercraft to four areas off the harbors, inclusion of a wintertime zone for tow-in surfing at the legendary surf break: Maverick’s , and efforts to reduce the introduction of non-native species.

Rash Guard Use in Kid’s Competitive Sports

Here’s a great article we previously published but have been asked to re-post so here you go:

This informative article will discuss how kids rash guards can protect your child while they’re participating in outdoor sports.

Whether it’s soccer, swimming, football, baseball or a host of other team or individual activities, kids are playing outdoor sports at younger and younger ages. This means that parents are purchasing lots of expensive sunscreen products which they have to reapply throughout the day as their children sweat and rub the products off.

But we have some good news as this expensive and inconvenient process is no longer necessary!

Rash guards will now protect your young athlete’s skin and block up to 97 percent of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays from ever reaching your child’s skin.

UV protective clothing, especially kids rashguards, are playing a bigger and bigger role in childrens’ outdoor sports these days. And rash guards are not just limited to water sports.

Rash guards are designed from tightly-woven lycra and nylon materials that will not only block harmful UV rays from reaching your child’s skin with an SPF rating of 150+, but will also protect their skin from rashes and abrasions.

Rashguards dry very quickly since they are designed to be used in the water. This will help to prevent any skin irritation that may be caused by prolonged exposure to wet clothes. You don’t have to worry that your child will be uncomfortable while they wait to dry.

Kid rash guards come in both long and short sleeve styles to meet all your child’s competitive sports needs. No matter what your little athlete needs there is a childrens rash guard available to meet them!

Kid rash guards are available in a variety of colors and patterns that will appeal to both kids and their parents.

Available in bright solid colors or fun patterns, rashguards can be found to make even your smallest athlete happy and safe.

Now that rashguards are taking the place of expensive sun block products in kid’s competitive sports you can shop at www.Buy-Rash-Guards.com with confidence knowing that our high quality rash guards are made in the USA, provide SPF 150+ UV protection and will protect your child’s skin against many factors that can cause painful burn and rash when participating in outdoor competitive sports.

Help Protect Sea Turtles

Sea turtles

Our friends over at Oceana have been working in the United States to protect sea turtles. They are working to get the western North Atlantic loggerheads uplisted from “threatened” to “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act. In addition, they have been working to reduce sea turtle bycatch in all U.S. fisheries. Despite all of their actions here in the U.S., it is not enough.

The same loggerheads they are trying to protect in the United States are swimming into Canadian waters and being caught in the pelagic longline fishery – in even higher numbers than in the U.S. Estimates suggest that pelagic longlines may be the most significant source of mortality for the western North Atlantic population of loggerheads.

America’s neighbor to the north is falling down on the job of protecting sea turtles, and Oceana needs your help. Every year, an estimated 1,200 loggerheads are caught in the Canadian pelagic longline fishery. That’s a daily average of more than four sea turtles that are wounded by fishing gear in just this one fishery. Fortunately, a government committee will meet soon to discuss the fishery, so please let them know that the survival of sea turtles is in their hands.

Beach Vacations Increase Kids Skin Cancer Risk

We came across a study published today that followed 681 caucasian children who were born in Colorado in 1998.

They found that each vacation spent at the beach was linked to a 5% increase in a specific type of small mole that is a risk factor for developing melanoma later in life.

“Parents of young children need to be cautious about taking their kids on vacations that are going to be sun-intensive at waterside locations, where people are outside for whole days at a time in skin-exposing swimsuits,” said Lori Crane, chair of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the Colorado School of Public Health.

You can read more about the study here…

U.S. Pledges $40 Million to Save Coral Reefs

Several months ago, the U.S. pledged $40 million to help save the Coral Triangle also known as “The Amazon of The Sea” for its biodiversity.

The reef system lies where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet and covers six nations. It’s home to 30 percent of the world’s coral reefs, represents 75 percent of the known coral species and is threatened by pollution, unsustainable fishing practices and climate change.

The area covered is East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and the Solomon Islands that comprise the Coral Triangle, which is also known as the Amazon of the Seas for its biodiversity.

We’ve talked about what you can do to help save coral reefs and told you how sunscreens are killing coral due to the bleaching effect of the chemicals found in them so be sure to wear a rash guard when you snorkel or dive  and do your part to help!

You can read more about the Coral Triangle here…

River Surfing in Montreal

River surfing in Montreal.

OK, these guys are hardcore surfers! There’s a group of guys up in Montreal, Canada who actually surf on the St Lawrence river in the dead of winter – BRRRRR!

Led by local surfboard shaper, Corran Addison, these guys suit up and hit the 4 degree, (yes, that’s FOUR DEGREE), water where the biggest danger they face is the large pieces of floating ice and can go form damaging your board to causing serious bodily injury if a surfer happens to get pinned between two large icebergs.

“It’s just like an obstacle course,” says fellow ice surfer Christine Pinsonneault, 25. “You’re basically doing a slalom around the blocks of ice as they come down the river. You can’t miss them all so you have to be willing to have a board you don’t mind destroying.”

“It’s not just about being an expert surfer, it’s also understanding the dynamics of this unique situation,” Addison says. “There are some things you would never think are dangerous until they happen to you. There could be 100 metres separating two big icebergs and you wouldn’t think twice about it until you have a friend who has been squashed between the two because he wasn’t paying attention.”

Jeronimo Creek Restoration Day

Our friends over at Earth Resources Foundation are at it again with another one of their terrific community events!

This Saturday, (January 31st), they’re sponsoring a day of native plant restoration at Jeronimo Creek, in Mission Viejo, California, (on Jeronimo Road between Marguerite and Olympiad).

This is a terrific event where you can get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery while helping the environment by planting native species to restore the area habitat. It’s also a way for high school students to not only make a difference in the environment but also complete community service hours.

The event runs from 9am to Noon and you can park at Pavion Park , 24051 Pavion, located off of Jeronimo. From Marguerite Pkwy turn east onto Jeronimo, go almost 2 miles and take a right into Pavion Park. Walk south along the trail to the restoration site.

Be sure to bring sunscreen, (or wear some UV protective clothing like our StayDry – KoreDry shirts), water, snacks, hat and closed toe shoes. They will be providing gloves, hoes, and other gardening tools. However, if you have your own – please bring them.

Canada Sued Over Killer Whale Protection

Southern resident killer whales.

Last October, Canada’s federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans was sued by six environmental groups for failure to safeguard the critical habitat of local British Colombian killer whales.

The specific species named in the suit are the endangered southern resident killer whales and the threatened northern resident killer whales, which are both formally listed under the Species at Risk Act. This is the first lawsuit of its kind in Canada and was filed as an attempt to force the government to consider critical habitat as part of the orcas’ official recovery plan.

The environmental groups who were frustrated by the Canadian government’s failure to take steps under the Species at Risk Act to protect the orcas are the David Suzuki Foundation, Environmental Defense, Greenpeace Canada, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Raincoast Conservation Society and the Wilderness Committee have turned to the courts.

Saudi Prince to Save Coral Reefs

His Royal Highness General Khaled bin Sultan, founder and Chairman of the Living Oceans Foundation, announced the formal launch of “Global Reef Expedition: Science Without Borders” the Foundation’s three-year coral reef study.

The goals of the expedition are to:

  • map and characterize coral reef ecosystems
  • assess major habitat types
  • identify factors that allow coral reefs to resist, survive and recover from major threats
  • determine impacts of climate change
  • identify the reefs’ current status and major threats
  • and help develop regional and global conservation measures

We’ve told you one way you can help from harming coral reefs with the chemicals used in sunscreens is to wear a rash guard shirt when you snorkel or dive to view them.

Oceans Acidity Levels Rising

Oceana

We know our customers here at Buy-Rash-Guards.com are ocean loving folks so we thought we’d pass this news along…

According to a recent report by Oceana, the largest international organization focused 100 percent on ocean conservation, the world’s oceans are becoming more acidic at an alarming rate due to the increase of carbon dioxide emissions over the last few decades and this is likely to drastically change marine ecosystems worldwide.

Oceana’s analysis, which draws heavily on published scientific literature, predicts a mass extinction of coral reefs in both tropical and colder deep waters this century. These die-offs will result from the absorption of carbon dioxide by the oceans, which leads to a lowering of pH, creating a more acidic environment for marine life.

Acidification reduces the ability of marine animals such as corals, crabs, lobsters, clams and oysters to create calcium carbonate skeletons and shells, which will likely reduce their survival rates, and their ability to mature and reproduce. Such a decline and widespread death of coral reefs will cost society billions of dollars annually in lost fishing and tourism revenue and will jeopardize the coastal protection services that coral reefs otherwise provide.

Oceana describes a framework of actions for policymakers, business leaders and the public to reduce carbon emissions and prevent massive die-offs of marine ecosystems, including:

  • Adopt a policy of stabilizing atmospheric carbon dioxide at 350 parts per million or below
  • Promote energy efficiency and low carbon fuels
  • Transition quickly to alternative energy sources
  • Regulate carbon releases
  • Preserve natural resilience of marine ecosystems by protecting them from overfishing and pollution

You can read the full report here at their website…
