Shown picking up her winner’s check wearing a bright red rash guard surf shirt, surfer Pauline Ado (FRA), 17, has just made Association of Surfing Professionals, (ASP), history as the first non-Australian female to claim the undisputed ASP Junior World Title, defeating opponent Bethany Hamilton (HAW), 18, in a hard-fought Final at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.
Clean three-to-four foot waves were on tap at Sydney’s legendary North Narrabeen Beach yesterday where Ado surfed her way to the crown and became the newest ASP World Junior Champion.
“I’m speechless,” Ado said. “I am so stoked. This is a dream come true. I can’t believe that I won. When I woke up this morning, I never imagined that this would happen.”
While her opponent Hamilton exhibited patience throughout the day, Ado wasted no time in surfing both the lefts and rights and although the lead flipped back-and-forth it was the young Frenchwoman who sealed the deal with a solid 13.43 out of a possible 20.
Congrats Pauline and nice women’s rash guard if we do say so ourselves.

The Billabong Pipeline Masters will not determine an event champion today. Small surf and stormy weather has prompted event organizers to call the contest off for the day.
Only 16 of 64 surfers are still in contention after the first two days of competition. Among them are five-time Pipeline Masters Champion Kelly Slater (USA), four-time Pipeline Masters Champion Andy Irons (HAW), 2004 event champion Jamie O’Brien (HAW) and defending champion Bede Durbidge (AUS).
ASP World No. 4 Joel Parkinson (AUS) leads the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings after eliminating front-runner Dusty Payne (HAW) with a perfect 20 heat total yesterday.
Another call on event status will be made tomorrow morning at 7. Only one more day of competition is needed to decide a champion.

After nearly a decade of working with Surfrider Foundation’s San Mateo Chapter and various other stakeholders, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is enacting new regulations designed to enhance wildlife protection in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The new regulations close an existing loophole that allowed unregulated usage of marine personalized watercraft (MPWC) within the Sanctuary. MPWC use will now be confined to four established zones, restoring the original intent of the law-protection of the National Marine Sanctuary. Additionally, a fifth seasonal zone was created to allow limited tow-in surfing at the world-renown Mavericks surf break, during certain times of the year when wave heights exceed 20 feet.

Just a friendly reminder that the Surfrider Foundation Long Beach Chapter’s 2nd Annual Breakwater Bash is happening Saturday, November 15, 2008 7PM-midnight at Smooth’s Sports Grille (144 Pine). $10 per person to benefit their “Sink the Breakwater & Restore the Shore” campaign.
They’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of the 1938 Surfing & Paddleboard Championships – the first national surfing championship ever – held in Long Beach, California way, way before the City Council voted Long Beach “The Aquatic Capital of America” and when there were waves in Long Beach. Two fabulous local music groups – the Lap Steel Duo and Swingin’ Tikis – will rock the crowd and set the mood to celebrate surfing history in Long Beach.
They’reproudly celebrating this event with the Long Beach Jr. Chamber of Commerce, one of the original co-sponsors of the Surfing & Paddleboard Championship way back in 1938, along with The District Weekly and Smooth’s Sports Grille.
Smooth’s will be featuring a special Surfrider dinner menu and 10% of the meal will be donated to Surfrider Foundation in Long Beach.

Just a reminder that tonight the Long Beach, CA Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will host a special evening with Surfline Forecasters who will discuss the basics of wave formation, what swells and wind conditions are best for the surrounding area and can also certainly throw in some info on what the surf would be like if the breakwater was no longer there.
So if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to forecast our great waves here in Southern California, here is your chance to learn and ask as many questions as you’d like.
The meeting will start at 7pm and will be located in the downstairs portion of the Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Marina Pacifica Mall (near 2nd Street PCH).

Extending safeguards afforded the elkhorn and staghorn corals under the Endangered Species Act, this Tuesday the National Marine Fisheries Service prohibited human activities that would kill or harm either species. Once the most abundant and important reef-building corals in Florida and the Caribbean, staghorn and elkhorn corals have declined by more than 90 percent in some areas, largely because of global warming-caused “bleaching,” an often fatal response to high water temperatures in which coral expel the symbiotic algae that give them their brilliant hues. Coral are also increasingly threatened by ocean acidification, in which oceans absorb the carbon dioxide we spew into our atmosphere and become more acidic, depleting seawater of compounds that corals and other organisms need to build protective shells and skeletons.
A petition by the Center for Biological Diversity earned the elkhorn and staghorn corals their current status as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and a Center lawsuit compelled the Fisheries Service to propose granting the species federally protected habitat. The agency’s latest rule, which will take effect Nov. 21, bars anyone from damaging or removing the corals; harming, polluting, or contaminating their habitat; or engaging in boating activities that harm or break the corals.

Green Sea Turtles usually make their homes in tropical waters, however there is a group of “odd ball turtles” that have turned an area of the San Gabriel River (more than a mile upstream from the beach) into their regular stomping grounds.
Scientists are stumped by the behavior of the seven turtles that have been discovered living in this 100-yard-wide river channel at the Los Angeles County-Orange County line. Green sea turtles are an endangered species and date back as far as 30 million years.
These sea turtles usually live in tropical environments like teeming coral reefs or white sandy beaches where they can lay their eggs, but this group has struck out on their own and live more than a mile upstream in one of Southern California’s most ecologically degraded rivers.
