CNN recently joined local commercial fisherman, Don Pierce, on a day of blue crab fishing in Chesapeake Bay. However, there were little crabs to be found due to the deteriorating state of health for these waters.

Development on the shoreline, population growth in the area and runoff from area farms and lawns have left the bay polluted with phosphorus, fertilizers and untreated waste. Pierce has been working these waters for 48 years now and says, “When I started in the late ’60s, there was commercial rock fishing, there was clamming, there was oystering, crabbing. Most of that is gone now.

For all you die hard fishing enthusiasts in the Haverhill, MA, area it’s time to get out your ice axe and heat up your sock warmers because on Sunday, January 31st, the Haverhill Hound Rod and Gun Club hosts its annual Ice Fishing Derby on  from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Chadwick Pond.

They’ll have an ice fishing clinic, bait, refreshments, free parking and cash prizes for both kids and adults.

Bad news for some of our customers who love to fish: the state budget woes are so bad in Hawaii that just 2 days before fresh water catfish season opens, they state has not decided whether it can afford to open the popular Nu’uanu Freshwater Fish Refuge spot this year because of state budget cuts.

“If DLNR, (the state Department of Land and Natural Resources), and other interested parties can’t find a solution to this issue, freshwater fishing for catfish and trout in Hawai’i is basically doomed,” said Arlen Meline, president of the Waikahe’olu Chapter of Trout Unlimited, a national fisheries conservation group.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is planning its 18th annual surf fishing workshop.

The workshop is October 17-19 and costs $150.

You can learn about rods, reels, weights, line, tackle, knots, bait, cast netting, reading the surf and caring for the catch. The workshop culminates with a surf fishing trip to Cape Lookout.

Some guy who can’t eat fish because he’s allergic to them, just caught a 92lb carp with a bow and arrow on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River!!

After he shot the thing they had a wrestling match on the shore… According to hunter/fisherman Darin Opel “It was real heavy, like lifting a refrigerator,” said Opel, who ripped his jeans on the arrow sticking from the back of the carp’s head during the ruckus. “Once he got out of the water, he started fighting hard. He beat me up pretty good. He definitely got a few licks in.”

On Saturday March 1st, fisherman Todd Pearson, of Anderson, S.C., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Savannah River Division tournament on Clarks Hill Lake.

He won with a five-bass catch weighing a total of 19lbs, 13 oz. The win netted Pearson $4,270 plus a $753 Ranger contingency bonus and put him a step closer to qualifying for the Lake Seminole Regional Championship in Bainbridge, Ga., Oct. 16-18, where he could win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

Pearson said he caught his bass on a deep-diving crankbait at the mouth of a cove on the main lake points.

“The fish were shallow early,” said Pearson. “I was using a stop-and-go retrieve and letting it fall down in the grass. Later in the day, I was catching pockets on a jerk bait where were suspended in 18- 20 feet of water in the tree tops.”
