Talia Gangini in Stand Up Paddle Top 10

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Talia Gangini took 8th place last week in Rainbow Sandal’s annual Gerry Lopez ‘Battle of the Paddle’ held at Doheny Beach, CA. The win placed her in the top 10 in the field of womens Stand Up Paddleboard racing

The event’s Elite Woman’s division race was by invite only and after the event Talia said, “It was a very tough event, but fun. You had to keep telling yourself you can do it. People and boards were flying everywhere. It was definitely the Battle of the Paddle”.

Gangini is no stranger to SUP. In 2007, at only 14 years old, she became the youngest woman to ever paddle the 32 mile Molokai to Oahu paddle board race on a team. She has achieved 1st place in several of Hawaii’s top races this year alone.

When asked what’s up next, Gangini said, “The next couple months I’ll be focusing on school, my jewelry line and designing new bikinis and just staying fit for the next event. There’s not too many on the horizon until the beginning of next year, but I’m sure something will pop up and I’m looking forward to it.”

Congrats to Talia!  :-)

Hairy Angler?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Our friends over at Oceana have a really cool new section of their website titled Creature Corner where they feature creatures of the deep in a searchable online encyclopedia, with content from the world’s leading family reference publisher, Dorling Kindersley.

The ocean is home to thousands of species, from the familiar to the bizarre and now you can learn about eachand every one!

We took a peek and thought we’d share one we’d never heard of: the Hairy Angler.  :-)

These bizzare looking fish live in the ocean’s depths all the way down to 5000 feet!

They have a very large mouth, tiny eyes and are covered in sensory hairs, giving them a disheveled appearance. Like most anglerfish, it has a movable ‘lure’ on top of it’s head that is formed from the first spine of the dorsal fin which is used to attract prey to it’s reach.

Rash Guard Use in Kid’s Competitive Sports

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Here’s a great article we previously published but have been asked to re-post so here you go:

This informative article will discuss how kids rash guards can protect your child while they’re participating in outdoor sports.

Whether it’s soccer, swimming, football, baseball or a host of other team or individual activities, kids are playing outdoor sports at younger and younger ages. This means that parents are purchasing lots of expensive sunscreen products which they have to reapply throughout the day as their children sweat and rub the products off.

But we have some good news as this expensive and inconvenient process is no longer necessary!

Rash guards will now protect your young athlete’s skin and block up to 97 percent of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays from ever reaching your child’s skin.

UV protective clothing, especially kids rashguards, are playing a bigger and bigger role in childrens’ outdoor sports these days. And rash guards are not just limited to water sports.

Rash guards are designed from tightly-woven lycra and nylon materials that will not only block harmful UV rays from reaching your child’s skin with an SPF rating of 150+, but will also protect their skin from rashes and abrasions.

Rashguards dry very quickly since they are designed to be used in the water. This will help to prevent any skin irritation that may be caused by prolonged exposure to wet clothes. You don’t have to worry that your child will be uncomfortable while they wait to dry.

Kid rash guards come in both long and short sleeve styles to meet all your child’s competitive sports needs. No matter what your little athlete needs there is a childrens rash guard available to meet them!

Kid rash guards are available in a variety of colors and patterns that will appeal to both kids and their parents.

Available in bright solid colors or fun patterns, rashguards can be found to make even your smallest athlete happy and safe.

Now that rashguards are taking the place of expensive sun block products in kid’s competitive sports you can shop at www.Buy-Rash-Guards.com with confidence knowing that our high quality rash guards are made in the USA, provide SPF 150+ UV protection and will protect your child’s skin against many factors that can cause painful burn and rash when participating in outdoor competitive sports.

Candidates Medical Records Need Disclosing

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

We’re all to familiar with skin cancer here at Buy Rash Guards – it’s one reason we opened our store…

With one of the most important presidential elections coming up it’s vital that we know about the health of the candidates, one of whom will be leading us through some very tough times.

With McCain’s history of melanoma we find it odd that calls for the release of his medical records are being met with resistance by his campaign. This decision is also befuddling members of the medical community, who ask a very basic question: what more important information is needed to elect a president other than his fitness for office?

Barack Obama has given the public far less information on his health than McCain – a one-page report detailing the last 21 years of care he has received.

There is something sadly ironic with the fact that physicians and airline pilots are required to release medical records, but not the would-be president of the United States.

Bionic Dolphin

Bionic dolphin

An Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin named Winter was rescued off the coast of Florida after being caught in a crab trap. She was nursed back to health, but eventually lost her tail due to her injury. This kept her from being able to swim normally so fearing long-term spinal injury she was fitted for a prosthetic tail. Winter still lives in captivity for safety reasons. She is the only dolphin in the world to done a prosthetic like this and she is doing great now. Swimmingly, in fact. :)

Beaches Resorts Selects American Wave Machines for New Waterpark

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

American Wave Machines, Inc., (AWM) an innovator in artificial wave technology, announced today that Beaches Resorts has selected the SurfStream standing wave machine for its new waterpark installation at its Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa.

The SurfStream standing wave attraction will be a major feature of the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa’s popular Pirate’s Island Waterpark, which is being expanded to ten times its initial size. SurfStream is the first and only high capacity standing wave machine that delivers real surfing and wave riding capabilities. With wave adjustability, which translates to operational flexibility for the waterpark, SurfStream gives both novices and seasoned surfers the most sought after surfing experience — the long ride.? Because the water moves at natural, gravity-fed speed, it is safe to have several people riding at once, even riding next to each other. This significantly increases throughput, capacity, and fun.

“We’re excited to work with Beaches Resorts to create a one-of-a-kind surf experience for their guests,”? said Bruce McFarland, president of AWM. “SurfStream gives people the experience of real surfing, which will give their guests a thrilling attraction and surely keep their visitors coming back.”

This new waterpark expansion is part of the resorts comprehensive $125 million development that will include a brand new Italian Village. Scheduled to be completed in Winter of 2008, this new Italian Village will feature 180 luxurious family suites with the finest amenities and services. The brand new Pirates Island waterpark will adorn the property and will measure ten times the size of the original. The themed aqua-playground will include nine water slides, a pool and aqua play area complete with water cannons, cranks and spray features, a splash deck with pop-up jets, and a winding lazy river. Families can choose to unwind in the nearby piazza area or watch the littlest swimmers frolic in the zero-entry pool for tots.

“When we learned that SurfStream provides an experience close to actual ocean surfing, we had to include it in the waterpark expansion at Beaches. Our goal is to offer the most exciting variety of waterpark activities available anywhere,” said Adam Stewart, CEO of Beaches Resorts. “SurfStream will give our guests an exciting ride that they will long remember.”

Sounds like fun – all we can add is: don’t forget to protect your skin with some UV protective clothing!

Rash Guards Help Save Coral Reefs

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

So there’s a new study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, that says sunscreen is killing the world’s coral reefs!

According to the study, the chemicals contained in most sunscreens, (paraben, cinnamate, benzophenone, and a camphor derivative), are the culprits.

The answer is to use sunscreens that block the sun’s UV rays by reflection, (such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide), other types of ‘eco-friendly’ sunscreens and of course rash guards. :-)

You can read the article at the National Geographic News website.
