South Swell Coming to Southern Califirnia

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Southern California surfers are having been watching all the recent activity ‘down under’ and are awiting the arrival of a fairly significant south swell in about 4-5 days.

As you can see in the above wave measurement graphic there’s been quite a bit of wave making activity in the Southern Hemisphere during the last few days and surfers are waxing up their surfboards in anticipation of the swell which is expected to reach 1-2′ overhead around Monday or Tuesday.

Time to grab your boardshorts and rash guard shirts and hit the water – COWABUNGA, dude!!   :-)

Skin Cancer Drug Shows Promise

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Researchers were recently happy to announce that an experimental drug called ipilimumab, (ip-ee-LIM-uh-mab), has shown to significantly improve survival rates in people with advanced melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The drug works by helping the immune system fight tumors. The FDA has pledged a quick review, and doctors are hopeful that the drug could be available by the end of 2010.

“We have not had any therapy that has prolonged survival” until now, said Dr. Lynn Schuchter of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, a skin cancer specialist with no role in the study or ties to the drug’s maker.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Last year in the US, there were about 68,000 new cases and 8,650 deaths from the disease. Worldwide, more than 50,000 people die of melanoma each year.

“The incidence is rising faster than any other cancer,” said one of the study’s leaders, Dr. Stephen Hodi of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. “When it spreads to vital organs, it’s almost always fatal.”

Unfortunately many people don’t think of skin cancer as a ‘killer’ and fail to protect themselves as well as they should. That’s why we’re committed to selling the highest SPF 150 rash guards and UV protective swim shirts available.

Skin Cancer May Be In Your Genes

Monday, October 12th, 2009

We all know that wearing a rash guard shirt and sunscreen are both terrific ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays and help prevent skin cancer, but some people may need to be extra vigilant if they have a family history of skin cancer.

A pair of studies recently released found that some types of skin cancer can be inherited.

One study found that if you have an identical twin with melanoma your risk of developing the disease is much higher than having a fraternal twin with this type of skin cancer. The other study found that if you have a sibling or parent with one of several different types of non-melanoma cancers that your skin cancer increased risk as well.

Even if you don’t have a family history of skin cancer you should still take precautions to protect your skin because you don’t want to be the first in your family to get it – so always wear a brimmed hat, UV protective clothing and   whenever you’re out in the sun.  :-)

It’s summer, which means the annual proliferation of jellyfish in the Mediterranean. Oceana TV has the scoop for you this month on how climate change, coastal pollution and overfishing cause jellyfish blooms, as well as what to do if you get stung.

Of course we here at Buy Rash Guards know that the easiest way to protect yourself from jellyfish stings is by wearing a rash guard shirt when you swim, snorkel and surf in the ocean.  :-)

New Skin Cancer Diagnostics

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

We here at Buy-Rash-Guards.com are all about UV protection as we know first hand how important it is to protect your skin from the harmful, cancer causing UV rays of the sun.

So we were excited to read about a team of researchers at the University of San Francisco, (UCSF), who have discovered a new and highly accurate way to distinguish malignant melanomas from benign moles by using genetic markers.

This method has proven to have a success rate over 90% compared to the typical biopsy which is examined microscopically. Researchers say that using this new method in conjunction with the standard microscopic examination will help diagnose difficult cases with much more accuracy.

As most people know, Melanoma is the deadliest and fasted spreading form of skin cancer. It can spread to almost any organ of the body and is difficult to treat in its advanced stages. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the higher the survival rate.

This is the first large-scale study to demonstrate both the high diagnostic accuracy and practicality of a multi-biomarker approach to melanoma diagnosis, according to Mohammed Kashani-Sabet, MD, professor of dermatology at UCSF and director of the Melanoma Center at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We can’t say it enough but please be sure to protect your family’s skin when you’re in or around the water with one of our rash guard shirts… the life you save could be your own or one of your kids!

O’Neill Cold Water Classic – Tasmania

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

The third day of competition at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic found itself at its third new location where surfing’s big names took to the water.

With conditions easing ever so slightly, contest director Matt Wilson chose Marrawah’s exposed Lighthouse Beach as the spot to finish off the Round of 96.

In this isolated northwest corner of Tasmania, the likes of Jordy Smith, Cory Lopez, Ben Dunn, aerial master Josh Kerr, and Damien Hobgood made the most of the powerful beachbreak.

There are high expectations for the 21-year-old South African surfing phenomenon, Jordy Smith, winner of this ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) tour two years ago, and he didn’t fail to disappoint, waiting until the second half of his heat to pull out his high scoring waves.

“It’s interesting being back on the ASP WQS,” Smith said, “because you can go through with 5’s. I can’t get away with that on the World Tour.”

This is the first time for Jordy on Australia’s island state, but he is fitting right into the Tasmanian waters,

“I met a few of the locals yesterday evening out in the water,” Smith said. “I was asking them how to get back because it was getting pretty dark and we were pretty far from anything. They were like, no worries catch a ride with us. It was crazy driving through the night with all the Tasmanian Devils about and stuff. We almost hit something the other day – I would have felt bad. We didn’t though, we stopped and let it cross the road.”

The heat of the day was a battle of spectacular young talent, with 19-year-old up-and-coming Australian star, Owen Wright taking it out ahead of Dusty Payne, Lincoln Taylor and Wiggoly Dantas.

“It was a pretty close heat,” Wright said. “The first day was incredible – the Bluff is an awesome wave. But it’s great it’s mobile. It keeps all the options open and you can get the best waves every day. I’ve been over to Tasmania before. But never to this corner. It’s a nice untouched place – it’s an awesome place to have an event.”

As Rob Bain, O’Neill’s Asia/Pacific Marketing Manager said, “It’s not just about the surfing here. We’ve had amazing waves and most of the surfers are discovering them for the first time ever. But this is also more like a road trip – it’s about the different experiences.”
