If you stumbled across our online store or this blog and have no idea what a rash guard is you may be thinking, “how weird”, or “that’s disgusting!”.

Rash guards, (also known as surf shirts, swim shirts, rashies and other names I probably haven’t heard of), are thin, tight-fitting shirts made of a lycra/nylon blend.
They’re designed to provide rash, abrasion and UV protection in and around the water. They can vary in SPF rating but our rash guards are some of the highest rated shirts, providing SPF 150+, (UPF 50+), protection wet or dry – that’s higher than any sunscreen on the market today.
Rash guard shirts fit skin tight so they stay put in the water and surfers have been wearing them for decades to protect their skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun as well as from painful rashes that can develop from laying and rubbing on their surfboards.
With all the dangers of skin cancer that have been discovered over the years, rashguards are no longer only being worn only by surfers but they are becoming a staple in many families arsenal of UV protection.
Cheaper, easier to use and longer lasting than any sunscreen, they’re perfect for the entire family and are especially great for kids who hate sitting still for their sunscreen application or getting out of the water for their re-application.
More recently and with the popularity of MMA and grappling, rashguards are now worn for skin protection in almost all forms of martial arts.

We came across a study published today that followed 681 caucasian children who were born in Colorado in 1998.
They found that each vacation spent at the beach was linked to a 5% increase in a specific type of small mole that is a risk factor for developing melanoma later in life.
“Parents of young children need to be cautious about taking their kids on vacations that are going to be sun-intensive at waterside locations, where people are outside for whole days at a time in skin-exposing swimsuits,” said Lori Crane, chair of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the Colorado School of Public Health.

Shown picking up her winner’s check wearing a bright red rash guard surf shirt, surfer Pauline Ado (FRA), 17, has just made Association of Surfing Professionals, (ASP), history as the first non-Australian female to claim the undisputed ASP Junior World Title, defeating opponent Bethany Hamilton (HAW), 18, in a hard-fought Final at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.
Clean three-to-four foot waves were on tap at Sydney’s legendary North Narrabeen Beach yesterday where Ado surfed her way to the crown and became the newest ASP World Junior Champion.
“I’m speechless,” Ado said. “I am so stoked. This is a dream come true. I can’t believe that I won. When I woke up this morning, I never imagined that this would happen.”
While her opponent Hamilton exhibited patience throughout the day, Ado wasted no time in surfing both the lefts and rights and although the lead flipped back-and-forth it was the young Frenchwoman who sealed the deal with a solid 13.43 out of a possible 20.
Congrats Pauline and nice women’s rash guard if we do say so ourselves.

Joy Monahan (Hawaii), 22, became the 2008 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Longboard Champion Wednesday after winning the Roxy Jam event at La Cote des Basques in Biarritz, France. Monahan, who defeated runner-up Chelsea Williams (Australia), in an exciting 30-minute final, posted a solid 14.10 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) to secure her first world crown in front of a cheering crowd.
“I am super stoked, I cannot believe I won the championship”, Monahan said. “Chelsea is one of the best surfers in the world and it was one of the most difficult heats to win. I got good waves and was very focused for the win.”
Monahan was unstoppable in the last heat of the event putting together strong combinations of classical turns and modern style re-entries in the clean two foot surf.
“I was very surprised to defeat Jennifer (Smith) in the semi-finals”, Monahan said. “I had a great week in Biarritz and it ends up perfectly. It is like a dream coming true and it is great to bring this world title home. So stoked.”
With Carissa Moore (Hawaii), earlier winning the ASP Grade-2 Pro Junior and Joy Monahan winning the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Championships, Hawaiians dominated the 2008 Roxy Jam and will be back next year to defend their respective titles.

The best women surfers in the world converge upon Victoria, AUS, starting March 19th for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach which is event number 2 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour.
This contest comes just weeks after the season opening Roxy Pro Gold Coast event where Sofia Mulanovich (PER), took first place. The ASP Top 17 battle it out in the idyllic setting of Torquay, determining who will come out on top and ring the bell.
The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach begins its waiting period on March 19 and runs through March 24.
