Local News Update

Recently the breakwall and local water quality has gotten some attention in the newspaper. Looks like we had a great summer for swimming with water quality near the beaches and bay getting grades of A and A+. Recently as of May some areas were listed  by Heal the Bay as ”beach bummers,” which denotes worst in the state. Hopefully these clean water reports will continue to hold.

Read the stories directly at the Press Telegrams website here and here.

Also an interesting story of where the surfboard rentals ended up after the Breakwall was constructed. Pretty sad to read where all those boards ended up. Check it out here.

Have a good weekend and enjoy the water.

Waiting Starts – Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang

A powerful exclusive list of tube experts arrived on Padang Padang seashore last Sunday to start the opening ceremony for the 2011 Rip Curl Cup. These surfers originate from far away destinations such as Hawaii, California, England and Brazil to find out their own heats and discover just who they are going to compete alongside while in the opening round of the contest.

Numerous fans crammed the shore to view this display and media conference with all the thirty two invited surfers : sixteen of Indonesia’s finest along with sixteen international leading tube surfers. This opening ceremony represents day one for the 5 week long contest waiting period, which ensures that every one of the thirty two invited contestants now are on notice to get to Padang within just twenty four hours notice, when contest administrators choose to allow the competition to start.

As usual, the spotlight in the opening ceremony was in fact a classic Balinese Kecak dance .

Tournament planners created the heat drawing to ensure every 4 man heat includes 2 Indonesian surfers along with 2 international surfers. Rip Curl also has kept 1 last place available within this competition just for a Wild Card, that will be declared later on during the waiting time period.
