June 5-11 is National Sun Safety Week and here are some sun safety tips:
Monday: Bug Repellants decrease sunscreen’s SPF as much as 1/3. When working with a combination, work with a sun block using a higher SPF!
Tuesday: Over exposure to the sun’s damaging rays may result in sun burns which increase your risk of establishing melanoma. For that reason, check your community UV Index which will offers important information to assist you to plan ones own out of doors activities in such a way which stop too much exposure on the sunlight. Your Ultraviolet Index forecast is issued every afternoon by the National Weather Service and Environmental protection agency.
Wednesday: Find shade anytime you can! The sun’s Ultra violet rays really are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so keep in mind the shadow guideline when in the sun: If your shadow is short it’s time for you to abort and then seek out the shade!.
Thursday : Do not be deceived simply by color or price of Sun glasses! The capability to stop UV mild just isn’t influenced by the darkness of the lens or the price tag. Although equally plastic and also glass lenses block some UV light, Ultra violet absorption is improved with the help of specific chemical substances to the lens components during manufacturing or perhaps by applying particular lens films. Usually select sunglasses which have been defined as hindering 99-100% of Ultra violet rays. Quite a few manufacturers’ brands will declare “UV absorption as much as 400nm.” This is the same thing as 100% Ultra violet absorption. Look before you decide on!

The Billabong Pipeline Masters will not determine an event champion today. Small surf and stormy weather has prompted event organizers to call the contest off for the day.
Only 16 of 64 surfers are still in contention after the first two days of competition. Among them are five-time Pipeline Masters Champion Kelly Slater (USA), four-time Pipeline Masters Champion Andy Irons (HAW), 2004 event champion Jamie O’Brien (HAW) and defending champion Bede Durbidge (AUS).
ASP World No. 4 Joel Parkinson (AUS) leads the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings after eliminating front-runner Dusty Payne (HAW) with a perfect 20 heat total yesterday.
Another call on event status will be made tomorrow morning at 7. Only one more day of competition is needed to decide a champion.

Just a reminder that tonight the Long Beach, CA Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will host a special evening with Surfline Forecasters who will discuss the basics of wave formation, what swells and wind conditions are best for the surrounding area and can also certainly throw in some info on what the surf would be like if the breakwater was no longer there.
So if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to forecast our great waves here in Southern California, here is your chance to learn and ask as many questions as you’d like.
The meeting will start at 7pm and will be located in the downstairs portion of the Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Marina Pacifica Mall (near 2nd Street PCH).

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield, British sailing’s undisputed kings of the comeback, have won their second successive 470 men’s silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Regatta in Qingdao on Monday, August 18th.
The Brits’ quest to claw back the points they needed to land silver didn’t look promising at the first mark, rounding in ninth with the French in second.
But Rogers and Glanfield held on and steadily ground down the rest of the fleet to take a dramatic medal race third, with the French trailing in sixth and the Dutch seventh, meaning the Brits leapfrogged their rivals to clinch a thrilling silver medal.
